There Be Dragons

There Be Dragons was a brand mark I created for a group of ex-Electronic Arts creative directors who had left the big corporate world to create games on their own terms.

The Solution

One of the most fabled groups of explorers were the Vikings. They would routinely set off into the unknown without knowing what they would find or if they would return.

It’s impossible for people in the 21st century to imagine the risks that were involved. For that reason, I found the image of the prow of a Viking ship the perfect metaphor for fearlessness and embrace of the new. I wanted to highlight the inspiration and determination of the founders who left the safety of good jobs to make a new home.

The Brief

Create a mark that takes its inspiration from the earliest naval expeditions. These first explorers were informed by folk tales and superstition and truly believed in supernatural forces and monstrous beasts.

The idea of sea monsters, specifically the dragon was the perfect analog for the mystery and power of the unknown.

The team at TBD also asked me to think about early maps and the implements of early navigation,
